Thank you, Theo for reminding everyone (dinosaurs included) of how important it is to keep safe in the sun: bringing a sun hat with your name in to wear at school and applying sunscreen before coming to school. It is unusual for us to be deploying our Warm Weather Plan so early in the summer term.

The glorious weather has been an unexpected bonus for Beech Class, who have been ecologists at Island Pond Wood this week, horticulturists and very persuasive salespeople in the front garden and worked with a sports teacher from TCS to develop their rounders skills.

Report from Aphaia, Beatrice and Summer

In Willow Class, we are practising using commas in lists when we write. We are reading Winnie and Wilbur at Chinese New Year. Our favourite page in the book was the one where Wilbur was up a tree eating fish!

Information from Sophie, India and Kiran in Oak Class

We have been learning about South American countries’ landmarks and capital cities. In the Secret Garden we planted orange carrots, white carrots and spinach. It was fun and exciting. It’s been great in English because we got to do similes about what you hear, see, smell, taste and feel. We see all of that with just some pictures.

This week’s news is from Beech Class.

Year 4 went to Island Pond Wood on Wednesday 30th April. We met up with an ecologist, who is a former pupil of Launton School who now works for the Wildlife Trust. Amy, Mollie, Charlie

We learnt how to identify different types of tree. We had a sheet of examples to help us with the leaf and bark identification. In the summer you can identify trees by their bark and leaves. In the winter you can identify trees by their bark and buds, as there might not be any leaves to look at. Fleur, Orlaith, Joshua

We found oak, beech, birch, aspen, field maple and hazel. When we walked through the wood we noticed little bird houses in the trees. Layla and Freddie

We also learnt to recognise some flowers, including: cuckoo flower, celandine and cranes bill. Before the cranesbills bloom, they look like the bill of a crane. Celandines look a bit like a butter-cup and cuckoo flowers are pale lilac. Robyn and Annabelle

Then we had a chance to do some bark rubbings and leaf tracing. Rosie

On our walk, we also saw red kites, moorhen chicks and a couple of mallards. The red kite soared across the sky like a cloud floating away at sunset. The moorhen chicks were curious about what we were doing and swam quite close.   Luca, Teddy, Ethan and Barney

We heard some songbirds who actually sounded like they were singing. These birds were: wrens, great tits and chif-chaffs. Wrens are surprisingly loud for their size. Rafferty and Rebecca.
